Microsoft News: Meet Copilot Cowork, Microsoft's Next Step for AI
Contents
Introduction
This June, Microsoft officially launched Copilot Cowork worldwide, making one of its most ambitious AI features available to Microsoft 365 Copilot customers.
While Copilot has already transformed how many people write emails, summarise meetings and analyse documents, Copilot Cowork takes things a step further. Instead of simply responding to prompts, it can carry out longer, more complex tasks across multiple Microsoft 365 applications, helping users complete work from start to finish.
So, what exactly is Copilot Cowork, and why is Microsoft calling it the next step for AI?
From AI Assistant to AI Co-worker
Microsoft describes Copilot Cowork as an AI execution layer rather than just another chatbot.
Instead of asking Copilot one question at a time, you can give Cowork a larger objective. It can then break the task into steps, work across different Microsoft 365 applications and return the finished result, asking for approval before carrying out any sensitive actions.
For example, Copilot Cowork can:
- Research a topic across your Microsoft 365 content
- Create a Word document based on its findings
- Analyse supporting data in Excel
- Schedule follow-up meetings in Outlook
- Share updates in Teams
Rather than switching between applications yourself, Cowork coordinates the work for you.
Built for More Complex Work
Copilot Cowork is designed for tasks that take longer than a simple prompt.
Microsoft says it can handle multi-step workflows that involve planning, reasoning and using multiple tools together. Throughout the preview programme, organisations used it for everything from comparing thousands of documents to preparing customer briefings and managing recurring business processes.
Importantly, users remain in control. Cowork works within existing Microsoft 365 permissions and requests approval before completing actions such as sending emails or scheduling meetings
A New Way to Use Microsoft 365
The launch of Copilot Cowork reflects Microsoft’s wider vision for AI. Over the past year, Microsoft’s focus has shifted from AI that simply answers questions towards AI that can actively help complete work. Recent announcements at Microsoft Build 2026 reinforced this direction, with AI agents and intelligent automation becoming central to Microsoft’s future strategy.
Copilot Cowork is one of the first products to bring that vision into everyday Microsoft 365 workflows.
Looking Ahead to ESPC26
As Microsoft 365 Copilot continues to evolve, understanding how features like Copilot Cowork fit into real-world organisations will become increasingly important.
Trusted by thousands of Microsoft professionals every year, ESPC is widely recognised as one of the best conferences for Microsoft 365 and Copilot users. At ESPC26 in Amsterdam, experts from across the Microsoft community will share practical guidance, real-world case studies and the latest product developments, helping organisations understand how to get the most from Microsoft’s rapidly evolving AI ecosystem.
If you’re planning your Microsoft 365 or Copilot journey, there’s no better place to learn what comes next.
