Microsoft News: Windows 11 Gets a Fresh Update

Microsoft has announced a series of improvements to Windows 11 this October, with updates designed to make everyday tasks faster, simpler and more reliable.
From better performance and more customisation options to improvements in Windows Search and device connectivity, Microsoft is continuing to refine the Windows experience.
Some of these improvements are already beginning to roll out, while others will arrive over the coming months. Here’s what’s changing.
A Faster, More Responsive Windows 11
One of the biggest areas of focus is performance. Microsoft says recent improvements have made Windows 11 up to 20% more responsive in certain scenarios, with changes affecting everyday experiences such as the Start menu, File Explorer, Search and Microsoft Edge.
Microsoft has also improved how Windows manages memory and system resources, particularly on devices with 8GB of RAM. By reducing unnecessary background activity, Windows can keep more resources available for the applications people are actively using.
For anyone who regularly switches between applications, browser tabs and documents throughout the working day, these improvements should help Windows feel smoother and more responsive.
More Control Over the Start Menu and Taskbar
Microsoft is also giving users more freedom to personalise their Windows desktop.
New customisation options allow users to change the size of the Start menu, choose which sections appear and adjust the position of the taskbar.
That includes the ability to move the taskbar to the top or sides of the screen, something Windows users have been asking to see return.
These changes make it easier to arrange Windows around individual preferences, whether you’re working on a laptop or using multiple monitors.
Windows Search Is Getting Smarter
Finding files, applications and settings is another area Microsoft is improving.
A redesigned Windows Search experience will make it easier to complete common tasks directly from search results.
For example, users will be able to search for settings such as dark mode or night light and make changes without having to navigate through several menus.
The updated search experience is currently available to Windows Insiders, with a wider rollout planned for the end of 2026.
Better Connections Between Your Phone and PC
Microsoft is also making it easier to move between Windows 11 and mobile devices.
Users can access phone notifications, messages and calls from their PC, while supported Android devices offer additional features such as opening mobile applications in separate windows and accessing phone files through File Explorer.
The aim is to reduce the need to constantly switch between devices, particularly when working across multiple applications.
Microsoft has also highlighted improvements to Bluetooth connectivity and Windows Hello, making everyday tasks such as connecting headphones and signing in more reliable.
Small Improvements That Make a Difference
While none of these changes completely transforms Windows 11, they address many of the everyday frustrations users encounter.
Faster performance, more control over the desktop, easier access to settings and better device connectivity all contribute to a smoother Windows experience.
Microsoft is also continuing to improve Windows Update, with changes designed to give users greater control over updates and reduce unnecessary interruptions.
For organisations using Windows 11 alongside Microsoft 365, Teams and other workplace applications, these improvements are another step towards making everyday work more efficient.
As Microsoft continues developing Windows, it’s encouraging to see attention being given to the core experience alongside its wider investments in AI and Copilot.
