ABOUT THE SESSION
Security teams implementing information protection using sensitivity labels may assume records management is simply the next layer of the same control. It isn’t.
In this practical, lightning-paced session, we clearly separate the two: sensitivity labels govern access and data handling, while retention and records controls govern how long data exists, what must be kept, and what must be defensibly deleted.
Using real-world scenarios security professionals recognize-unmanaged content sprawl, “keep everything forever” defaults, and collaboration content growth-we focus on what must change when moving from protection to lifecycle management.
The AI connection is straightforward and practical: better records management improves data hygiene, which improves Copilot outcomes and reduces the risk of outdated, duplicated, or over-retained content surfacing in AI experiences.
Attendees leave with a clear mental model and actionable guidance for implementing records management after information protection.
Assumed Knowledge:
Attend if you are a data security, compliance, or Microsoft 365 professional who has working knowledge of sensitivity labels and basic Microsoft Purview concepts and is now being asked to implement retention and records management or support AI/Copilot readiness through better data hygiene. Prior records management experience is not required.
Practical Takeaways:
A contrast and comparison of sensitivity labels and retention labels in practical scenarios and why they require very different approaches.
Out of Session Scope:
Do not attend if you are looking for end-user labeling instructions, deep records appraisal theory, or step-by-step Purview configuration walkthroughs-this session focuses on practical differences, mindset shifts, and implementation decisions, not UI demos.
