Microsoft News: One Copilot App Is on the Way

Microsoft is simplifying the Copilot experience, bringing its personal and work-focused Copilot apps together into one unified Microsoft Copilot app.

The change began rolling out globally across mobile and web in August 2026, with Windows and Mac following from mid-September. For Microsoft 365 users who have become accustomed to different Copilot experiences for work and personal use, the aim is simple: make Copilot easier to find, access and use.

What Is the New Microsoft Copilot App?

Until now, Microsoft Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot have existed as separate apps, serving personal and work users respectively.

Microsoft is now bringing these experiences together under the simpler Microsoft Copilot name. Users will be able to sign into the same app with a personal Microsoft account, a work or school account, or both.

The experience you see will depend on the account you’re using. Those coming from Microsoft 365 Copilot should see relatively minor changes to navigation and branding, while personal Copilot users will see a more noticeable change to the app experience.

What Happens to Work and Personal Data?

This is an important question for organisations, and Microsoft has been clear that bringing the apps together does not mean bringing work and personal data together.

Work and personal accounts will remain separate within the app. Microsoft’s existing security, privacy, compliance and administrative controls will also continue to apply when employees use Copilot through their work or school accounts.

Users with both account types will be able to switch between them within Copilot, with visual cues helping them understand which account they’re currently using.

Why Is Microsoft Combining the Copilot Apps?

For users, the most obvious benefit is simplicity. As Copilot has expanded, Microsoft has introduced different experiences across Microsoft 365, Windows, the web and mobile devices. Bringing the main Copilot apps together creates a clearer entry point for users, whether they’re asking Copilot a personal question or using it to get work done.

The move also follows Microsoft’s wider effort to create a more consistent Copilot experience. Earlier this year, Microsoft redesigned Microsoft 365 Copilot around a simpler interface and a more flexible entry point across Microsoft 365 applications.

When Is the New Copilot App Available?

The rollout began globally for web and mobile users in mid-August 2026. Microsoft plans to follow with the updated Windows and Mac apps from mid-September.

Users don’t need to create a new account, and existing work or school accounts will continue to use their organisation’s Microsoft Entra ID credentials.

For Microsoft 365 users, the update should ultimately mean fewer separate Copilot experiences to navigate and a more consistent way to access Microsoft’s AI tools.

What Does This Mean for Microsoft 365 Users?

The change doesn’t fundamentally alter what Microsoft 365 Copilot does. Instead, it simplifies how users access it.

That’s significant because Copilot has quickly grown from a standalone AI assistant into a much broader part of Microsoft’s ecosystem. Creating one recognisable Copilot app gives Microsoft a simpler foundation as it continues to add new capabilities.

For organisations, it will be worth making users aware of the changes, particularly employees who use Copilot with both personal and work accounts. The key point to communicate is that while the apps are coming together, work and personal data remain separate.
